Our discussion about this novel started off with many members stating that the book was good; however, it was the not writing style, which is simplistic, in which captured the readers. It was the story itself. Maurice's story is worthy of picking up this book and reading about how one person can make a difference.
We discussed the New York of the 1980s compared to the New York we know now. Then the hotels were filled with homeless people and drugs; however, one member commented that "now the homeless are not tolerated [in New York]."
Many thought that Michael was probably a father figure to Laura more than the love of her life. Because of her own family history, she was drawn to someone who was kind to her and showed her affection, which her father did not do.
Finally, we came back again and again talking about the difference between poverty in an urban environment, like New York, and poverty in a rural environment.
